Lord, Lord: a poem about church abuse

You had us call you apostle
But you weren’t half of Peter or Paul
You turned out more like king Saul
Hunted a shepherd boy for his strings
It’s never over until your pompous pride sings

It was preach without the practice
You had us in fear of God’s judgment
But we fear more His judgment on you
Told us we’d be full of curses
If to you we didn’t empty our purses

Lord, Lord,
As you served him your own way
As you’ll say to him on that day
Depart from us, we never knew you
As we depart from you, you never owned us
Sue told me God’s got a lawsuit with you

To unite with you, families were divided
Cut us off from the outside to keep us inside
She knows her master’s voice but yours isn’t it
You were the one beaten as you hindered your own prayers
It’s not submission if she stays out of fear

You were charming yet alarming
Manipulating with words
Speaking strongly, weakening wrongly
Being accountable to none
Makes it easier to run

Lord, Lord,
As you served him your own way
As you’ll say to him on that day
Depart from us, we never knew you
As we depart from you, you never owned us
Sue told me God’s got a lawsuit with you

To you we had to submit and obey
Every question is rebellion
When your control is at stake
We had to cover you with prayer
As you covered up your sins

You held us to the gun of your tithing lies
God’s delegated authority was your disguise
You twisted holy words for unholy gain
In sheep’s clothing and a blazer of light
If in doubt, you were always right

Lord, Lord,
As you served him your own way
As you’ll say to him on that day
Depart from us, we never knew you
As we depart from you, you never owned us
Sue told me God’s got a lawsuit with you

Lord, Lord
Forgive them when they dont know
But judge them when they do
Lord, Lord
Your Kingdom suffers violence
And abusers take from us by force
Lord, Lord
The victims are left alone
But how their faith has grown
Lord, Lord
When you adorn them with millstones
Their leadership becomes a sinking ship
We were little and stumbling
But now, upon the rock, steady and tall
Upon our stories you’re building your real Church
And the gates of abuse will never prevail
They will never prevail
